The Town of Brighton operates under provisions set forth by
the General Assembly and the voters of Brighton. In the field of municipal government,
Brighton has a Council Manager form of government. The Council, otherwise known
as the Selectboard, is the governing body for the town of Brighton. This form
of municipal government is likened to a business corporation or nonprofit
agency; the Selectboard is the Board of Directors, and the Town Manager is the Chief
Executive Officer. The Town Manager adheres to a strict code of ethics which
prohibits political support in local election(s). There is a distinction
between professional staff and elected officials. The main objective of both,
however, is to provide effective and efficient service at the local level.
