Providing Essential Services to the People of Island Pond

The Water/Sewer Department is tasked with managing, controlling, and operating the public water supply, distribution systems, and the municipal sewer system. In conjunction with the Water and Sewer Commissioners, their duties include ensuring that the town is in compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations, and planning for infrastructure improvements that enable us to serve the community safely, efficiently, and effectively.

Construction of $7.8 Million Brighton Wastewater Treatment Facility Underway

The Town of Brighton has commenced a $7.8 million upgrade to its Wastewater Treatment Facility (WWTF), serving the Island Pond Village area. This significant project aims to modernize the 0.150 MGD facility, which was originally constructed in 1977. The WWTF has had only as-needed equipment replacements over the years and many of its components have reached the end of their service lives.

These upgrades to the Brighton WWTF will not only enhance environmental and public health but also position the town as a leader in water and energy efficiency. As the project progresses, the community can look forward to a modernized facility that meets current and future regulatory requirements, ultimately contributing to the well-being of the residents, the community’s economic vitality, and the surrounding ecosystem. Lead/Copper Inventory Disclosure

Federal and state regulations require municipalities around Vermont to identify and remove potential sources of lead from public drinking water and to conduct a Service Line Inventory for all connections by October 2024. Early in 2024, Brighton/Island Pond residents received notification of the Service Line Inventory and were asked to sign up for an appointment. During this short visit, a member of the Water/Sewer Department entered homes to inventory the line material coming into the residence, as well as the material plumbed inside.

Sewer Board

The Sewer Board oversees the municipal sewer system, including establishing rates, rules, and regulations for its control and operation. The sewer board is appointed by the Selectboard to four-year terms. The Selectboard has adopted the practice of appointing the same people who are elected as Water Commissioners, owing to the close relationship between the functions of the two systems.
